What To Know Before Joining a Golf League

If you want to golf more than you already do, but don’t know how to do that, joining a golf league could be a great option for you. Golf is a very social game, and joining a golf league is a great way to introduce yourself to new people and improve your golf game at the same time. Here are a few things to know before joining your first golf league.

Different Types of Leagues

There are a few different types of leagues out there, which gives you the opportunity to find the right one for you. Here are a few examples:

• Ladies
• Men’s
• Mixed
• Beginner
• Couples
• Juniors
• Parent Junior
• Private: these leagues are usually not run and operated by the course or golf club. They are usually set up and run by a league representative who has a relationship with the golf course or club. They typically run between 12-14 players depending on who is running the league. 

Cost

There are a few different factors that affect the price of the league. These can include:

• Quality of course: the quality of the course you’ll be playing at will affect the cost of the league. The better quality course, the more expensive it’ll be to play.
• End of Year Banquet: if your league puts on an end of year banquet, the cost of playing in the league will probably be more.
• Carts: some leagues will provide carts, other will not and you’ll have to walk the course. Leagues that choose to use carts will be more in cost.
• Prizes: some leagues like to have prizes during the span of the league, others have awards at the end. Playing in a league that does something like this will affect how much is costs to play with them.
• Length: the longer the league goes, the more expensive it’ll be to play.

Signing Up

There are a few different ways you can sign-up to play in a league. One way is to contact your local courses to first see if they have any leagues set up, and second is to see if they have any room. Many leagues fill up fast, so make sure you stay on top of when sign-up for leagues open. Another way to play in a league is to see if there’s one at your place of work. Playing with coworkers is a great way to learn more about them, and can also be a great way to network.

Watching your first big professional golf tournament can be exciting, with the roar of the crowds and cheers for the players being heard from every hole on the course. However, figuring out the best way to watch can be complicated. Below you’ll find a few tips on the best way to watch golf at a professional tournament.

Always Come Prepared

It doesn’t matter if the weather forecast says it’ll be sunny all day long, you should always pack an umbrella for those unexpected rain showers (or for some shade from the sun!). You should also pack layers that you can easily put on, such as a raincoat or windbreaker. Always wear comfortable shoes, and if the weather isn’t ideal and part of the course is muddy, consider wearing a pair of rain boots or hiking boots. You won’t always be close to a concession stand, so pack a few snacks and water bottles you can access on the go, especially if attending a tournament in the heat.

Check Out Practice Rounds

You’ll find that the last day of a golf tournament will attract the largest crowds, however, if you’re scheduled to go on a Thursday or Friday, you’re in luck. These days have the smallest crowds and make it easier to watch the players complete their rounds. Some of the best spots to see them are at the driving range or the chipping and putting greens. These are the spots you can really see how the players warm up for their rounds, and if you’re lucky, you can even get an autograph from a few players.

However, one smart way to plan out your day is to set up in a spot where you can see a green, fairway, and a tee meets, so you won’t need to keep moving spots all day long. Golf: A Brief Course of History

It’s hard to imagine a world without golf, isn’t it? To be honest, it’s really a sad thought. We don’t want to think about a world where Jordan Spieth isn’t dominating every major tournament. We can’t picture the absence of exciting moments created by the likes of legend golfers like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer. When they celebrated, we celebrated, and when they failed, we felt their pain right alongside them.

Yes, the game of golf and its talented players have become an instrumental part of our lives. Watching great golfers makes any novice understand just how complex a sport it really is. So how did this great game first come to be?

According to Livestrong, golf had a somewhat unexpected start in the United States, when a pair of drunk men were arrested for breaking windows by hitting balls with their clubs in Albany in 1657. Well, something about what this pair did clearly had an impact on people, because from there, a new sport was born in America.

That being said, every sport has to start somewhere. Most early golf courses in this country were crude constructions, often only consisting as three holes in the middle of surprising locations, like cow pastures. Eventually, when the United States Golf Association, or the USGA, was formed in 1894, well-manicured, 9-hole courses began to spread far and wide. This organization began to establish amateur championship tournaments, crowning victors such as Charles Macdonald  and Horace Rawlins. The growth and enthusiasm for the sport only continued from there, as the American Professional Golfers Association, or the PGA, was established in 1916 by department store owner Rodman Wanamaker. The association held the first PGA Championship tournament in October of that same year, further shifting the game of golf into the sport we know and love today.

It’s clear that in its lifetime, this sport has only grown in complexity and excitement, and it’s a game that, fortunately, isn’t going away any time soon.
