What to Know When Hosting a Golf Outing

Attending a golf outing for a charity or an organization that you support is always an occasion many look forward to. After all, what’s not to look forward to? It’s a day centered on quality time outdoors, coming together to support a common cause, and of course, playing everyone’s favorite summer game.

But HOSTING a golf outing, while still an enjoyable and memorable experience, is an entirely different thing. There are countless details to organize and an endless array of tasks to accomplish. It’s easy to become occasionally overwhelmed and lost, causing planners to not only wonder if they are doing assigned tasks correctly but causing them to question if there are things to be done they aren’t even aware of.

When planning a golf outing, the first thing to do is to take a deep breath. But the second thing to do is know that there are plenty of resources out there that can help you accomplish this. You just need to know where to look and who to ask.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you host a golf outing.

Finalize a Budget and Speak to Potential Sponsors
Once you establish the dollar amount you have to work with, speak to local businesses about potential sponsorship opportunities for your larger costs. Common ways businesses choose to sponsor include hole patronage, donating their items or services, or even sponsoring the entire tournament.

Assign Tasks Appropriately
Evaluate the team that is working with you and place them in areas that best utilize their strengths.

Give Thought to Tee Times and Scoring
Larger groups should utilize shotgun tee times (where a party starts simultaneously on different parts of the course rather than one group at a time on the first hole). When thinking about scoring, consider the most common format of scoring in golf outings, which is a scramble. This means that everyone in the group hits from the same spots, allowing players to pick the best shot and go from there.

The experience of attending a golf outing is entirely different than the experience of planning and executing a successful golf outing. To say that it is a challenge is an understatement. But with the proper resources and with a helpful team by your side, rest assured that your upcoming golf outing is guaranteed to be a successful and memorable evening for you and your guests.
